The Landesa Center for Women’s Land Rights champions women’s secure access to land by providing resources and training that connects policymakers, researchers, and practitioners around the world. We pilot innovative solutions to secure women’s land rights and educate development experts about the gap between customary and institutional law. Our program goal is to build capacity to promote approaches that strengthen and secure women’s land rights.

Report: Housing Protections Fall Short for Domestic Violence Survivors

One week after President Obama signed the Violence Against Women Act, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty has released a new report showing that state action is still urgently needed to prevent homelessness for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. In some areas of the country, one in four homeless adults report domestic violence as a cause of their homelessness.There’s No Place Like Home provides a comprehensive examination of the canon of state laws designed to address housing instability for survivors.

Assessing the effectiveness of World Bank investments – The Gender Dimension

Today it is widely acknowledged that increasing the gender sensitivity of development aid increases its effectiveness. The report “Assessing the effectiveness of World Bank investments – The Gender Dimension” evaluates the extent to which the World Bank integrates gender concerns into its policies and investments, pointing out structural, financial and policy gaps that risk negatively impacting women in countries with Bank investments.

‘Inequal Land Rights Aggravates Women’s Status’

The impact of the inequality in lands rights has aggravated women’s socio-economic status, allowed for sexual harassment and violence against women and contributed towards marital instability, separation and divorce.
This assertion was made by the Executive Director, Women Environmental Programme (WEP), Ms. Priscilla M. Achakpa in her address entitled “Gender land evaluation using gender evaluation criteria” presented at a training workshop on gender and land evaluation held in Abuja yesterday.

The Rapporteur begins 2013 at a fast pace: on March 4th, rapporteur Raquel Rolnik will present to the UN Human Rights Council her reports on Israel and Rwanda missions, which took place last year, and also on the official visit to the World Bank, undertaken in 2010. At the time, the rapporteur will also present a preliminary version of the thematic report on security of tenure.

Land Reforms Boost Women Rights in Rwanda

Rwanda’s land reforms have allowed the public to safeguard their rights on land which has significantly improved livelihoods among communities, according to the 2012 ActionAid report. The report, titled ‘Lay of the Land Improving Land Governance to Stop Land Grabs’, is a result of a survey that covered 24 countries worldwide.
