More than 150,000 take to streets across Israel in largest housing protest yet

More than 100,000 people took to the streets Saturday to protest the spiraling costs of living in Israel. Marches and rallies took place in eleven cities across the country, with the largest ones taking place in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Be’er Sheva and Haifa. The protesters chanted “the people demand social justice” and “we want justice, not charity.”

PRESS RELEASE – It’s time to democratize housing policies in Algeria, urges UN expert

ALGIERS / GENEVA (19 July 2011) – “I commend the strong commitment of the Algerian government in the housing field as reflected in the huge state production of social housing in the last decade and the very important budgetary inversion devoted to this area,” said the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, at the end of her mission to Algeria from 9 to 19 July 2011*. “These efforts are particularly relevant in an international context characterized by the disengagement of the States from the housing sector.”

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing has just concluded another mission. This time, Raquel Rolnik was in Algeria, where she met with national government representatives, local authorities, civil society organizations and ordinary citizens in field visits in several cities. Her next mission will be in Israel and OPT. Meanwhile, the project “Women and Housing Rights” is being developed through the virtual platform launched last month by the Rapporteur. More than a hundred people worldwide have already registered to participate in discussions. You can contribute too!

PRESS RELEASE – UN expert to assess rights implications of housing policies in Algeria

GENEVA (7 July 2011) – The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, will visit Algeria from 9 to 19 July 2011 to study the effect of the country’s housing policies and programmes on the human rights of its people.

Raquel Rolnik will participate in Geneva in the Special Rapporteurs’ Annual Meeting.

The virtual platform of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing is already running. This new tool will be used initially for developing the project “Women and the Right to Land and Housing.” People worldwide can now register and contribute to the thematic report and the guide and leaflet which will be produced on the subject. See also news and pictures of the working visit of the Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik to Haiti earlier this month and her agenda to the next period.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing Raquel Rolnik has just completed her mission to Argentina, where she has been between April 13th and 21st. After visiting the country, where she met with representatives of the government, civil society organizations and citizens, she presented her preliminary findings. The final report will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2012.
